Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker left many lingering questions. Particularly: How did Emperor Palpatine survive Return of the Jedi? These free ends, like Finn’s confession of Drive sensitivity to Rey, are slowly being sewn up. Enter Disney with a novelization of The Rise of Skywalker.

Written by Star Wars universe author Rae Carson, the novel explains that the Emperor’s spirit was transferred right into a clone of his physique. In Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader throws Palpatine down a reactor shaft after the Emperor tortures his son Luke Skywalker.

On the planet Exegol the place Kylo Ren encounters Palpatine initially of The Rise of Skywalker, he inspects all that equipment. He acknowledges it from his research of the Clone Wars. From the e-book:

“All of the vials have been empty of liquid save one, which was practically depleted. Kylo peered nearer. He’d seen this equipment earlier than, too, when he’d studied the Clone Wars as a boy. The liquid flowing into the residing nightmare earlier than him was combating a dropping battle to maintain the Emperor’s putrid flesh.”

Ren then realizes the cloned physique is housing the Emperor’s “precise spirit.” However the physique will not final.

“‘What might you give me?’ Kylo requested. Emperor Palpatine lived, after a style, and Kylo might really feel in his very bones that this clone physique sheltered the Emperor’s precise spirit. It was an imperfect vessel, although, unable to comprise his immense energy. It could not final for much longer.”

The e-book will not be out there in bookstores till March 17, however early copies have been bought at this weekend’s “popular culture occasion” C2E2 in Chicago and passages surfaced on-line.
